What Do You Really Mean When You Say, "I AM FINE"

Do you know that “I am fine” is the most told lie in the English language? It is usually used when someone is, in fact, not fine but they say “I am fine” because they don’t want to burden others and it’s easier to explain than what’s wrong, would you agree?

F.I.N.E is said to stand for “Feeling Insecure, Neurotic and Emotional”, and can also be “Feeling I’m Nothing to Everyone” or “Feeling Inadequate, Needing Encouragement”. Whatever your definition of FINE may be most of us would just lie and say “I am FINE”, because it’s an easy way out.

Then why do we say “I am fine” when clearly, we’re not:

  • Not sure of what you really feel
  • Pretending to be okay
  • To avoid conflicts
  • Scared to tell what you're really feeling

Only those who identify with these feelings can truly understand the agony behind the words “I am fine.”

The next time someone asks how you are, think about the response you’re already anticipating. What if we didn’t settle for “fine”? What if we stop, take a moment, and answer with true sincerity how I’m doing? Or better yet, tell them how you’re feeling. We could all benefit from slowing down and honestly evaluating how we are doing.

What if your biggest struggle became the foundation for your greatest strength?

In this raw and powerful episode of The Billy Boss Show, actor Rick Hoffman (best known for his role in Suits) opens up about his personal battle with severe anxiety and OCD recovery starting at just 23 years old. Long before mental health was openly discussed, Rick found himself waking up each day in a nightmare of fear, shame, and uncertainty yet he fought his way back through therapy, resilience, and sheer determination.

Rick shares what it was like to live with OCD and anxiety before mental illness was understood, how he found the courage to seek help, and why he now speaks openly about the truth that there is no shame in mental illness. His story is one of struggle, healing, and perspective—a reminder that success is not about avoiding pain but learning how to rise through it.

  1. What beliefs or fears have I internalised about mental health—and how are they shaping how I view myself?
  2. Where in my life do I feel pressure to “have it all together,” even when I’m struggling?
  3. How do I typically respond when I feel anxious, overwhelmed, or out of control—and what healthier choices could I practice?
  4. What support systems (therapists, friends, practices) can I lean on to remind me I don’t have to face this alone? If I fully believed there was no shame in my struggles, how would I show up differently in my relationships, work, and daily life?
